IHC Reserves Verdict on PTI Chairman’s Plea Over Cipher Case Hearing Location

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has reserved its verdict on a petition filed by PTI chairman Imran Khan challenging the law ministry’s decision to conduct his trial in the cipher case at Attock jail. Imran Khan was sent to jail on August 5 following his conviction in the Toshakhana case, but his sentence was suspended by the IHC on August 29.

The special court had directed Attock jail authorities to keep him in connection with the cipher case and extended his judicial remand until September 13. Imran Khan was booked for “deliberately missing a copy of the diplomatic cypher” under the Official Secrets Act, based on a complaint from the Home Secretary.

The case was registered after Azam Khan, the former principal secretary to Imran Khan and ex-prime minister, made revelations about the use of a US cypher for political purposes and to avoid a no-confidence motion. Azam Khan had been “missing” for months before making these claims and recording his statement under CrPC 164 before a magistrate. The IHC’s verdict on Imran Khan’s petition is awaited.
