Khawar Maneka, the former husband of Bushra Bibi, was attacked by lawyers outside a court where Judge Shahrukh Arjumand was hearing the plea of PTI founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi against their conviction in the un-Islamic nikah case.
Women present at the court hurled bottles at Maneka following his allegedly derogatory remarks during the hearing.
During the session, Maneka’s counsel requested that the case be transferred to another judge, citing a lack of confidence in Judge Arjumand. The judge responded that the plea of no-confidence had already been dismissed and that only the high court held the authority to transfer the case. Consequently, Judge Arjumand adjourned the court session and retreated to his chambers without announcing the verdict.
Judge Arjumand subsequently wrote a letter to the High Court regarding the case, stating that Maneka had expressed no-confidence against him and that the complainant’s lawyer had been attempting to delay the proceedings. He requested that the appeals be transferred to another court and suggested setting a timeframe for their resolution.
The couple’s marriage took place in February 2018, and the nikah was performed by Mufti Saeed in the presence of close relatives and friends. Last year, Maneka approached the court claiming the marriage was illegal and against Sharia laws.
