Minister Declares Intent to Revoke PEMRA Amendment Bill 2023

In response to the demurrers by intelligencers, the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Marriyum Aurangzeb, blazoned on Monday the decision to withdraw the PEMRA Amendment Bill 2023. This advertisement was made during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Information. During the meeting, Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb stated that the government’s intention was to exclude what she appertained to as the” black laws” of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority( PEMRA). The minister further noted that the bill had been developed in discussion with stakeholders while the party was in opposition. The PEMRA Amendment Bill, 2023, introduced by Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, had preliminarily been passed by the National Assembly. The bill included several emendations, similar as icing fair, transparent, and independent conditions for broadcasters’ television channels. The bill also proposed adding a newsub-section to insure the allocation of fair, transparent, and independent conditions by registered standing companies. also, the minister suggested an correction to Section 8 of the bill, relating to reporting by the standing commission, which would specify conditions for content compliance and periodic reporting by agents. The decision to withdraw the bill comes as a response to the enterprises raised by intelligencers and the wider public, pressing the significance of securing freedom of expression and media independence.
