Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman has taken his legal battle to the Supreme Court, filing an application against the Islamabad High Court’s (IHC) verdict in the Toshakhana criminal case. The former premier, through his legal team, is seeking to have the Toshakhana case declared non-maintainable.
The Islamabad High Court had recently set aside a session court’s ruling that deemed the Toshakhana reference against the PTI chairman as maintainable. Chief Justice Aamer Farooq of the IHC ordered a rehearing of the case and rejected Imran Khan’s appeal to transfer the case to another court. The court also issued a notice for the following week regarding the restoration of the right of defense.
The Toshakhana issue had sparked significant controversy in national politics, leading to the Election Commission of Pakistan disqualifying the PTI chief for providing “false statements and incorrect declarations.” The reference alleged that Imran Khan failed to disclose details of gifts he received from the Toshakhana during his time as prime minister.
The Election Commission’s detailed judgment of the reference stated that Imran Khan was disqualified and unseated from his National Assembly seat under Article 63, 1(P) due to submitting a false statement and declaration. The case continues to be a focal point in the country’s legal and political landscape.
