On Wednesday, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) once again postponed the indictment of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief and former Prime Minister Imran Khan in a contempt case filed against him. Imran Khan was asked to appear before the ECP for indictment, but he did not show up.

During the hearing, Shoaib Shaheen, who was representing the former prime minister, requested the ECP to adjourn the proceedings as his client needed to visit the hospital for a check-up. Shaheen also sought exemption for Imran Khan from appearing in the ECP contempt case.

However, a member of the ECP pointed out that charges were supposed to be framed against Imran Khan that day and questioned how exemption could be granted in a contempt case. Shaheen argued that charges against his client are yet to be proven.

The ECP then adjourned the hearing until August 22. In August 2022, ECP Issues Notices to Imran Khan and Others Over Alleged Use of ‘Intemperate’ Language Against CEC and Electoral Watchdog. The political leaders had repeatedly criticized the commission and CEC Sikandar Raja, accusing the electoral body of being a “subsidiary of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.
