The Supreme Court of Pakistan has reserved its verdict on a plea seeking the formation of a full court to hear pleas challenging the trials of civilians in military courts. The six-member bench, led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial, discussed the petition and reserved the verdict. The court will announce its decision tomorrow.

The case pertains to the government’s decision to try suspects accused of attacking military installations under army laws following violent clashes that broke out across Pakistan on May 9. The government’s decision to hold military court trials for those found guilty was challenged by several petitioners, including PTI Chairman Imran Khan, former chief justice Jawwad S Khawaja, legal expert Aitzaz Ahsan, and civil society members.

Earlier, the apex court had rejected the federal government’s plea to constitute a full court. The issue of civilian trials in military courts has been a matter of debate and concern in Pakistan, with some considering it unconstitutional. The court’s upcoming verdict will be significant in addressing this contentious issue.
