New York Designates Road in Honor of Allama Iqbal

As Pakistan’s Independence Day draws near, a road in the Queens borough of New York City has been officially named after Allama Muhammad Iqbal, Pakistan’s renowned poet-philosopher. The road, now called ‘Allama Iqbal Avenue,’ was inaugurated during a ceremony held in the Richmond Hill neighborhood of Queens.The event was attended by a large number of people signaling the public flag and chanting taglines of’ Pakistan ZindaBad'( Long Live Pakistan). The trouble to have the road named after Allama Iqbal was the result of prompting by the Pakistani- American community, with a commanding part played by the American- Pakistani Advocacy Group( APAG), a not- for- profit association. Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Masood Khan, complimented the chairman of APAG, Ali Rashid, for his leadership in achieving theco-naming of the avenue in honor of Allama Iqbal. The event was also attended by Speaker of the New York City Council, Adrienne Adams, who stressed Allama Iqbal’s significant part in the creation of Pakistan as an independent country. Theco-naming of the road was seen as a way to celebrate Allama Iqbal’s benefactions and promote mindfulness of Pakistan’s history and culture in the United States.
