PTI Chairman Unavailable for ECP Contempt Case Appearance

The Ministry of Interior in Pakistan has informed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) that producing Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan in a contempt case would pose a “security risk.”

This case stems from allegations that Imran Khan, along with other PTI members, used “intemperate” language against the Chief Election Commissioner and the electoral body.

A commission headed by Sindh Member Nisar Durrani was convened to hear the contempt case against Imran Khan, Fawad Chaudhry, and Asad Umar. While the two former federal ministers appeared before the court, Imran Khan, who is currently in Adiala Jail, was not presented.
The Interior Ministry and Islamabad police cited security concerns in their communication to the ECP, apologizing for the inability to produce the former prime minister. The Ministry recommended that the contempt case be heard within the jail, and AIG Operations noted that Imran Khan had expressed concerns about his security.
The ECP, in response, questioned how the Interior Ministry could ensure peaceful elections when it couldn’t provide security to an individual. The ECP has summoned the Secretary of the Interior Ministry for the next hearing on November 13, as per Imran Khan’s production orders that require him to be presented before the ECP in the contempt case.
