Sarim Burney Arrested in Karachi

Sarim Burney, a prominent human rights activist, was arrested by the Anti-Human Trafficking Police in Karachi, according to reports from Pakistan Talk Show.

Burney, who is also the founder and chairman of the Sarim Burney Welfare Trust, was apprehended at Karachi Airport upon his arrival from the United States. His arrest was the result of a joint operation conducted by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and a US agency, following a prolonged period of monitoring by the FIA.

Burney is accused of being involved in serious crimes, including human trafficking.

The FIA’s Anti-Human Trafficking Team has taken him into custody, and a legal team has arrived at the FIA office to meet with him. The specific charges against Burney have not been detailed, but the involvement of an international agency suggests a significant case.

The Sarim Burney Welfare Trust, under his leadership, has been known for its efforts in helping vulnerable individuals, including women and children. Despite this philanthropic background, the allegations against Burney have brought a sharp focus on his activities.

This arrest is part of a broader crackdown by the FIA against human trafficking in Pakistan. Recently, the FIA conducted operations in Karachi, arresting nine human smugglers, including a senior government officer. These individuals were involved in issuing fake educational certificates and facilitating illegal migration. The gang reportedly sent 250 individuals overseas on fake documents, charging fees ranging from Rs 1.5 to 2 million per person.

The arrest of Sarim Burney and the ongoing FIA operations underscore the agency’s intensified efforts to combat human trafficking and related crimes in Pakistan.
