Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s physical remand extended in cipher case

The Special Court in Islamabad has granted the Federal Investigation Agency( FIA) a three- day physical remand of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf( PTI) leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi in a case related to a politic cipher that reportedly went missing from former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s guardianship.

The case is being pursued under the Official Secrets Act of 2023. During the hail, the FIA requested a 9- day physical remand for Qureshi to prop in the recovery of the missing cipher dupe. Qureshi’s counsel opposed the request. Eventually, the court extended Qureshi’s physical remand for three days and instructed the probing officer to present him again on August 28.

The FIR( First Information Report) was registered on August 15 under the Official Secrets Act. It was filed on the complaint of the Home Secretary. In addition to Qureshi, former Prime Minister Imran Khan, former star Secretary Azam Khan, and former Planning Minister Asad Umar were mentioned in the FIR.

The FIR contended that the former Prime Minister and Foreign Minister had distorted the data of the politic cipher and conspired to misuse its contents for unrighteous purposes, venturing state interests. This case involves allegations of mishandling classified documents and has attracted significant attention in Pakistan.
