The 9th of Muharram is being observed in Pakistan with solemnity and reverence to honor the sacrifices of Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his companions in the Battle of Karbala.

Throughout the country, Taziya, Alam, and Zuljanah processions are being held to commemorate the martyrs of Karbala. Nohas and marsiayas, along with self-flagellation, will be part of the processions, creating a somber atmosphere in the streets.

Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A) and 72 of his companions, including friends and family, were martyred during the Battle of Karbala in Iraq in 61 AH (680 AD) after he refused to pledge allegiance to Yazid’s rule.

To ensure security during the mourning processions and majalis, law enforcement agencies, including police and Rangers, have been deployed along the procession routes in major cities and towns. In Islamabad, 1685 security personnel are deployed for the main procession, while Lahore has around 17,000 security personnel along with surveillance cameras for security purposes.

In Karachi, Islamabad, and 14 districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, mobile phone services have been suspended as a security measure. Special traffic plans have also been arranged across the country to maintain a peaceful atmosphere during the observance of the 9th and 10th of Muharram.
