The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has decided to close six corruption inquiries, including the Sharif Trust case involving former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family members.

The decision was made during the Executive Board Meeting (EBM) of NAB held on January 1, 2024, chaired by NAB Chairman Lt Gen (retd) Nazir Ahmed Butt. The Sharif Trust case, authorized on March 31, 2000, alleged that the Sharif family had received significant amounts of money through illicit means in the Sharif Trust.

It was also claimed that the trust’s accounts had not undergone audit scrutiny, and funds had been misappropriated. The NAB terminated the investigation under Section 31-B of the National Accountability Act, 2022, amended by the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM)-led government.

Other closed cases include the Safe City corruption case against Islamabad Inspector General Akbar Nasir Khan, the Park Enclave Housing Society case against Capital Development Authority (CDA) officers/officials, and inquiries against federal government officials regarding illegal appointments of favored individuals.

the NAB closed the inquiry against Shahid Malik, Shahbaz Yaseen Malik, Saima Shehbaz Malik, and others. The decision to terminate these investigations was made after considering the totality of facts, circumstances, and evidence. The Sharif Trust case, which had been criticized for delays in investigation by the joint investigation team (JIT) formed to probe Panama Papers, has now been officially closed.

The NAB Chairman, in consultation with the Prosecutor General, has the authority to withdraw or terminate proceedings under the National Accountability Act if they are deemed unjustified. The closure of these cases marks a significant development in the ongoing legal landscape involving prominent political figures and corruption allegations.
